PUNE : A minor fire incident was reported on the Daund-Pune shuttle train on Monday morning after a passenger allegedly threw a lit cigarette into a dustbin inside the train’s lavatory. The incident caused brief panic among passengers but was swiftly brought under control, officials confirmed.
The fire broke out around 8 AM near Yavat in Pune district, while the train was on its way to Pune. According to the Daund railway police, smoke was noticed coming from the toilet area, triggering alarm among commuters. Railway staff responded quickly and managed to extinguish the fire before it could spread. There were no injuries or casualties in the incident.
A 55-year-old man, suspected to be mentally unstable, was detained at the scene. “The passenger appeared mentally disturbed and was later handed over to the railway police for further inquiry,” a railway spokesperson said. The train was held up at Yavat station for approximately 20 minutes as a precautionary measure and resumed its journey after officials ensured it was safe.
Railway authorities are investigating the matter further and have once again urged passengers to strictly avoid smoking or carrying flammable items inside trains.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about onboard safety, fire prevention, and the need for stricter enforcement of anti-smoking rules on Indian trains.
